1880s

Finding teachers for schools wasn't all that easy - Green Valley Public School's teacher Eber Gibbs had a year's teacher training when he was appointed in 1884. There being no teacher's residence at the school, he boarded with families in the Green Valley and Liverpool area. He was thought by the community and the Education Department to be a bachelor, until he married a Miss Lock in 1885. Somehow, someone found out about the first Mrs Gibbs who was residing at Hallan's Boarding House in Liverpool, and Eber Gibbs was arrested and charged with bigamy. He admitted both marriages, and wrote his resignation as teacher of Green Valley School from his prison cell in Liverpool Gaol.
