Mary Greatrex (nee Keating) was born in 1847 at Liberty Plains. Her memories of school life were recorded:
"My first school-master was an ex-convict, accused of forgery. My uncle, Dean McEnroe had him reprieved, and sent him to my father to teach us children. He had about ten pupils."
